As a billionaire, you might wonder what to do with all that money. Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg provides at least one answer to that question. He owns land on the Hawaiian Islands and is building luxury estates there. One example is right on Pilaa Beach on the island of Kauai. This is a thorn in the side of many Kauai residents. After Zuckerberg began buying land in 2014, he started pressuring the owners of the parcels within the properties to sell by filing lawsuits. After protests, he withdrew the lawsuit. It later became known that he nevertheless acquired shares from landowners through his shell companies.

It all started in 2014. Zuckerberg bought two adjacent plots of land. Cost: $100 million.
Between 2014 and 2021, additional plots of land were acquired, including small fragmented parcels within the land parcels and a former sugar cane plantation.
In early 2025, the tech billionaire then acquired the largest plot of land to date.
A complex consisting of two large estates and several small houses has been built on the property located inland. The NZZ reports, citing “Wired,” that there is said to be a bunker under the estate.
The second property is located in close proximity to Pilaa Beach. Three villas and four bungalows have been built there since 2020.
